PHP for Beginners
PHP is a server side scripting language that is used for designing dynamic and interactive websites. PHP was first written by a Danish programmer Rasmus Lerdorf in the year 1994. He developed the concept of PHP scripting to replace the Perl script that was being used at that time. This programmer tried his PHP script in his personal webpage to see how much traffic his page was receiving every day and to collect other information.
The biggest convenience that programmers have found by using PHP when compared to using Perl is that PHP is less complex and can be easily understood by another programmer. PHP can easily be merged with the hyper text markup language when compared to Perl. This is because Perl is a bit complicated language when compared to PHP and the popularity of PHP is growing quickly but then programmers must never forget that Perl is a true language and has been in existence from the eighties.
The expansion of PHP is Hypertext Preprocessor, which resembles more or less ASP. The PHP scripts are executed on the server and can support various databases like MYSQL, ORACLE, SOLID, ODBC, etc. PHP also has an open source code. The reason behind the popularity of PHP is that it can run on different platforms like Windows, Linux, and UNIX and can also get attuned to almost all types of servers that are used today. A few are Apache and Microsoft’s IIS.

PHP is also used for client side GUI applications and also in text mode libraries to improve cross platform GUI applications. PHP resembles the language “C” and PHP also includes < stdio.h> family.
The main feature that is seen in PHP is the extension feature. This scripting language allows the developers to write extensions in C language and then give functionality to the PHP language. These extensions can then be brought together during the run time. The concept of extensions has been included in this scripting language to add support to Windows API, process management and in a few compression formats. Other important features include internet relay chat, dynamic image generation and Flash content.
